DC-DC Laptop Power CoNverter
For my power electronics class final project, I developed a 180W DC to DC Power Converter for the purpose of powering my gaming laptop from either a DC constant source like a car or from a lithium polymer battery of the type that would power an RC quadcopter or airplane.
The system is configured with a buck converter on the input followed by a boost converter on the output. This enables the device to produce the required 19V output from any reasonable DC input between 9 and 50 volts. This configuration was chosen because an inverting supply was out of the question due to safety concerns for non-floating DC inputs, making a buck-boost converter an unsafe choice. Flyback converters require lossy clamps and transformers to operate because of their leakage inductance, so I also opted out of that design.
